UKGraduate VisaMyth vs Fact

UK Graduate Route 2027: What Really Changes (and What Doesn't)

Published 7 November 20263 min readBy UniMapple counsellors, Hyderabad

Seen the reels saying "UK post-study work is over"? It isn't. The Graduate visa is still open. What changes is how long you get, and the date you apply decides it. Here's the honest breakdown.

⚑ The 30-second version

  • 🟒 Graduate route: still open after your UK degree.
  • 🟑 Apply on or before 31 Dec 2026: you get 2 years.
  • 🟑 Apply on or after 1 Jan 2027: you get 18 months (bachelor's and master's).
  • 🟒 PhD graduates: keep 3 years either way.
  • 🟠 2 years for "high-compliance" universities: announced in the Budget, no list or start date yet.

πŸ—“οΈ The change in one line

🟑 It's about your application date. Apply for the Graduate visa on or after 1 January 2027 and you get 18 months. Apply on or before 31 December 2026 and you get 2 years. PhD graduates keep 3 years either way.

🚫 Rumour #1: "The UK ended post-study work"

"There's no point studying in the UK now. You can't stay and work after your degree."

🟒 False. The route continues. The Graduate route still lets you stay and work after your degree: 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates who apply from 1 January 2027, and 3 years for PhD graduates.

πŸ“… Your application date matters, not your start date

  • You apply from inside the UK, after you finish your course.
  • Finishing in 2026 and applying by 31 December? You're on the 2-year rule.
  • Starting a 1-year master's in 2027? You'll finish after the cut-off, so plan for 18 months.

πŸ›οΈ Rumour #2: "Every UK university gets the same deal from now on"

"18 months for everyone, wherever you study. University choice doesn't matter."

🟠 Announced, details missing. In the Budget on 28 October 2026, the government said graduates of "high-compliance" universities with strong job outcomes will keep a two-year Graduate visa. There's no university list and no start date yet. Law firms and the press say details are still awaited.

πŸ‘‰ What it means for you: don't pick a university on a rumour. Plan on 18 months. Treat 2 years as a possible bonus, not a promise.

⏱️ Rumour #3: "18 months is too short to be worth it"

"Nobody can find a job in 18 months. Skip the UK."

🟒 It's enough if you plan early. 18 months gives you time to look for a skilled job with a visa sponsor. Your course choice and your university's employer links now matter more than ever.

πŸ‘‰ What it means for you: start job-hunting in your final term, not after graduation. Pick a course with clear hiring demand.

βœ… Your UK game plan for 2027

  1. Budget for the Graduate visa. GOV.UK lists a Β£937 application fee plus the healthcare surcharge (Β£1,035 per year when we checked).
  2. Ask each university two questions: "Where did your graduates get jobs?" and "Do you expect to qualify for the two-year route?"
  3. Pick a course that leads to a job, not just a visa. Skilled-job outcomes decide what your 18 months are worth.
  4. Re-check on the day you apply. The rules are moving. We'll update this post when the university list is published.
